Why Isn’t My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT or Google AI?
If you have typed your own service into ChatGPT and watched it name three competitors, the problem is real and it is not personal. AI assistants do not rank businesses the way Google ranks pages. They cite sources. If nothing they can read says plainly what you do, where you do it, and that other people vouch for you, there is nothing to cite — so they name someone else.
The gap is wider than most owners think
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index looked at more than 350,000 business locations across 2,751 brands. Google's local three-pack showed 35.9% of those locations. ChatGPT recommended 1.2%. Almost everyone who has done the work to show up on Google has done nothing that gets them named by an assistant.
Meanwhile the audience moved. BrightLocal's March 2026 survey found 45% of consumers had used an AI tool to find a local business, up from 6% a year earlier. And for health questions specifically, BrightEdge found 88% now return a Google AI Overview — the highest rate of any category it tracks, up from 72% the year before. Your category is the most AI-answered one there is.
Reason one: your site does not answer the question
An engine can only quote a clear answer. Pages built as brochures — a hero image, a philosophy statement, a contact form — contain nothing liftable. Pages that state the question and answer it in the next sentence do. This is the least glamorous fix on the list and the one that moves the most.
Reason two: your listings disagree with each other
Google's own AI optimization guidance, updated in July 2026, tells businesses that the way to be represented in its AI features is a complete, accurate Google Business Profile. Assistants reach past your site into the same places. BrightLocal tested twenty searches across ten niches on Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT Search and found business websites were the most-cited source overall, with Yelp cited in a third of searches. In July 2026 OpenAI signed a licensing deal to pull Yelp reviews and ratings directly into ChatGPT. If your hours, address or practice name differ across those sources, you are a less reliable thing to quote.
Reason three: nobody is vouching for you recently
Press Ganey found consumers read 4.7 reviews across 2.3 sites before choosing a provider, and that 64.8% consider a review more than a year old irrelevant. A dormant review profile does not read as neutral. It reads as stale.
Reason four: you are checking the wrong surface
Google's AI Overviews and Google's AI Mode are two different products, and they cite different sources on the same question 83% of the time, according to SISTRIX. Being named in one tells you nothing about the other. SISTRIX also found 56% of AI Mode's cited sources rotate week to week, with a stable core of one to five domains persisting in 86.5% of queries. Getting into that stable core is the actual goal. One good week is noise.
What to do this week
Ask the engines directly. Type “best [your service] in [your city]” into ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, and write down who gets named and which sources get cited. That list is your competition and your to-do list at the same time. Then fix the three things above in that order: a page that answers the question, listings that agree, and reviews with recent dates on them.
Frequently asked questions
How long until an AI assistant names me? Listings and review work can show up in weeks. Getting into the stable set of sources an engine returns to is a matter of months, and it is not a switch you flip. Anyone promising a date is guessing.
Do I need to be in ChatGPT and Google AI both? They cite different sources, so work that earns one does not automatically earn the other. The underlying fixes — clear answers, consistent listings, real reviews — serve both.
Is this just SEO with a new name? No. SEO competes for a position in a list of links. This competes to be one of two or three names inside a single answer. The work overlaps; the win condition does not.
