About Prairie Roots Health

Prairie Roots Health was founded in 2024 by Dr. Cheryl Bones (DC, FMCP) and Dr. Jessica Pearson (MD, FMCP-M) to bridge the gap between traditional and alternative medicine. Friends and colleagues, they wanted to bring patients a more collaborative, holistic approach to care.

The team provides functional medicine designed to address the root causes of illness, not just the symptoms. Every patient is treated as an active partner in their wellness journey. The approach is personalized and whole-person, integrating functional medicine, lifestyle-based therapies, and chiropractic care to support healing, balance, and long-term vitality.

Prairie Roots Health is a Featured Provider on the Vitality Growth Labs Directory.

Meet the Team

Dr. Jessica Pearson

MD · FMCP-M Co-owner, Gynecologist, Functional Medicine Physician

Dr. Jess combines a background in traditional medicine with holistic, whole-body care. Born and raised in South Dakota, she completed her medical degree at USD and her OB/GYN residency in Georgia before serving in the U.S. Air Force. There she became Medical Director of Women's Health and later Associate Program Director of an OB/GYN residency program. Today she specializes in women's health, hormone balance, and supporting strong, healthy pregnancies. With additional training in perinatal fitness, she empowers women at every stage of fertility, pregnancy, and motherhood. Outside the clinic, you will find her doing CrossFit, triathlons, or hiking with her rescue pup, Zora.

Dr. Cheryl Bones

DC · FMCP Founder, Chiropractor, Functional Medicine Practitioner

For Dr. Cheryl, chiropractic and functional medicine are personal. Growing up, she faced her own GI struggles and injuries that conventional care could not resolve. Working with a chiropractor and functional medicine doctor finally brought lasting relief, and she set out to do the same for others. Dr. Cheryl earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic at Northwestern Health Sciences University and is certified through the Institute for Functional Medicine. She works with patients of all ages, blending chiropractic, muscle and fascial work, cranial therapy, and functional medicine to address GI dysfunction, skin and sinus issues, POTS, and pediatric care. She grew up on a farm near Tripp, SD, and now lives near Parker with her husband Dan and their three children.

Sam Niewenhuis

CNP Nurse Practitioner, Functional Medicine Trained

Sam earned his nursing degree and Family Nurse Practitioner degree from SDSU and brings extensive experience in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and urgent care across Sioux Falls health systems. After his own family faced health challenges that conventional medicine could not solve, Sam discovered functional medicine and it transformed both his family's health and his approach to patient care. At Prairie Roots, he helps men, women, and children get to the root of health concerns with a focus on practical, whole-person solutions. Sam is a devoted husband, father of four, and enjoys gardening and his backyard chickens.

Dr. Sarah Tadlock

DC · Doula Chiropractor and Doula

Born and raised in Sioux Falls, Dr. Sarah brings a movement and performance background (competitive soccer, gymnastics, athletic training) into her chiropractic care. After earning her doctorate at Northwestern Health Sciences University, she worked in Minnesota before returning home. Her special focus is moms and babies. She brings together chiropractic expertise and doula training to support women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. When she is not at Prairie Roots, Dr. Sarah is coaching at CrossFit KOTA.

Plus: Kendra Poulter (Health Coach and Operations Director) and Bekah Tiernan (Phlebotomist).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is functional medicine and how is it different from conventional primary care?

Functional medicine looks for the root cause of illness rather than only managing symptoms. At Prairie Roots Health, that means longer first visits, advanced lab testing, and a personalized plan that integrates functional medicine, chiropractic care, hormone therapy, and lifestyle-based work. Conventional primary care is built for acute issues; functional medicine is built for the chronic ones, especially when standard labs come back "normal" but you still do not feel well.

What conditions and symptoms does Prairie Roots Health treat?

Prairie Roots actively treats thyroid disease, PCOS, adrenal fatigue, perimenopause, diabetes, endometriosis, fertility concerns, and gut health issues. Common symptoms patients come in with include hormone imbalance, low libido, fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, joint pain, poor sleep, hot flashes, menopause, abnormal menses, thyroid dysregulation, and weight gain that will not respond to diet alone.

Who are the providers at Prairie Roots Health?

Four providers: Dr. Jessica Pearson (MD, FMCP-M, OB/GYN and functional medicine physician), Dr. Cheryl Bones (DC, FMCP, founder, chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner), Sam Niewenhuis (CNP, family nurse practitioner with functional medicine training), and Dr. Sarah Tadlock (DC, chiropractor and doula). Kendra Poulter is the health coach and operations director, and Bekah Tiernan is the phlebotomist.

Does Prairie Roots Health offer telehealth or virtual visits?

Yes. Prairie Roots offers both in-person and virtual care. Telehealth is available for patients in South Dakota and Minnesota, where the providers are licensed. Virtual visits are a strong fit for functional medicine follow-ups, lab reviews, and ongoing care planning.

Does Prairie Roots Health accept insurance?

No. Prairie Roots is cash-pay only. HSA and FSA funds are accepted. The cash-pay model lets the team spend more time per visit (60 to 90 minutes for a first visit) and order the kind of comprehensive labs that insurance typically will not cover for functional medicine work-ups.

What services does Prairie Roots Health offer?

Bio-identical hormone therapy (cream and compounded protocols for women and men), functional medicine root-cause work-ups with advanced labs, chiropractic care including adjustments and muscle work, primary care including routine screenings and management of chronic illness, plus health coaching, cupping, and stress management.

Is Prairie Roots Health accepting new patients?

Yes, currently accepting new patients. Call 605-307-5737 or email hello@prairierootshealth.com to schedule a consult or set up a discovery call.

How long until I feel a difference at Prairie Roots Health?

Most patients notice meaningful change within 8 to 12 weeks of starting a personalized plan, though some changes happen sooner. Hormone optimization, gut healing, and adrenal work each move on different timelines. The first visit walks through your full health history, sets expectations on what to look for and when, and orders the labs that drive the plan.
